Show & Tell Friday : Design & Branding

So, I know Show and Tells have been like our ONLY posts for awhile, which is totally unfair and we’re remedying this! We have a lot to share, and many things in the works, but wanted to give you a peek into some of the goodness that our neglected design site will include. (For those of you that don’t know, we dual-wield cameras and sketchbooks; the variety keeps us fresh.) We’re really going to try and show our designs in an environment, vs. flat jpgs. With some items, this is a bit of a challenge, but that’s the fun of it. It will look much like our LookBook site, but different “guts.”

We are also considering splitting up our blog a bit more. We know not everyone here to check out our latest pictures wants to hear about logos, but in the meantime, they have to share a room and fight over top bunk.

A Few Thoughts on Branding & Logos:

With this new year, we will be working on creating solid brands. Not just manufacturing a logo, but encouraging clients to really do like we are for our portfolio-create an environment. Logos have become a trendy item, and you can pick one up for the bargain price of $99-or freesies if you find the right hungry design student. Having a logo does not mean much by itself. The most beautiful, conceptual logo on the side of a skeezy van with a flat tire and busted window isn’t seeing its full potential. A logo mark should be a reflection of the business or product, how the customers are taken care of, and if nothing else, just be simple and non-disruptive. Remember that the business determines the strength of the brand; build a solid foundation for your business before considering how that translates into a visual statement.

We’ve been hinting at something over the horizon for a bit. Working on our marketing plan, processing, work-flow, sleep schedule, website, materials, and the like-taking the opportunity to prepare for this new year. So soon, some things will be changing-but for the better, and will be sure to include lots more eye candy and things that make us happy. And possibly some more of Joel flying.

Something we want everyone to know is that we are always evolving. Our live, our work, our thoughts; seems like a good way to thrive.

Show & Tell Friday : Photo Inspiration

A few years ago, Joel and I stopped in at an estate sale in Kansas City. There was a large box of slides, an old “one at a time” projector, and this book of contact sheets that we picked up for $25. This was where our obsession with other people’s pictures began. Not just photographing people (as that had been long underway) but staring at ones others had taken. Not by artists, professionals, or anyone remotely famous; just people with a camera documenting their life. I’m amazed like a 3-year-old by the mystery behind them and how much you really can gather from an image, without the verbal background story.

When we moved out to Oregon, there were (thankfully!) only so many things we could take with us; you should’ve seen how much stuff we gave away. (I actually think most of our own wedding pics are still in a box in a friend’s attic!) But not this. As although our own history is important, we have the drive to narrate and read other stories. (Super Hero pics aside. )

The only date I could find on here was from 1959; 50 years ago. Makes me wonder-50 years from now, what will the photographs made today say? Humbling to think about on this rainy Friday afternoon. (I gave some of the images have narrative tags if you just let the cursor rest on them.)

Our Young Design Grasshopper : Jamie

Say hello to our intern, Jamie! She does our laundry, alphabetizes our soup cans, and counts out all our vitamins for the week. Okay, so maybe none of the above, but would be handy. Some fun facts in no particular order :

Has a fear of owls, lived in Rome, explored Sweden by herself, enjoys piggy back rides down the mountains of Colorado, does not enjoy the musical stylings of James Brown, sees beauty in oddly patterned leaves and Santa-like beards, and had a pet rat named Izzy. She loves kids because they are honest, unbiased, and psyched about everything. She dreams of working with Invisible Children, and using her design skillz for social good, vs. cube-farm, “make it pop” evil. Hence the little “Sassy Revolution” icon for her.

She’ll be helping us out here and there, with some Wedding Hive stuff and anything else we can pile on her plate. Someday, we’ll all be traveling around in a roving photographer/designer herd, sprinkling love dust on people and giving lots of high fives; remember, you met her here first.
